Letter from Anne Chamberlain (8 Chester Square [London]) to WSC thanking him for sending her a copy of the first volume of his “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples”. She explains that having been away, she had not yet had time to do more than glance at it, but comments on some chapters, particularly the one on William the Conqueror. She picks out some lines on his love for stags, comparing it with the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. She also asks WSC to give her love to CSC, adding that she was glad to hear that CSC was well again. Signed manuscript.

Letter from Anne Chamberlain (8 Chester Square [London]) to WSC, thanking him for sending her a copy of the second volume of his “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples”. She explains that she had waited to write to him, knowing that he would be deluged with letters. She adds that she had hoped that he would send her a copy, and was looking forward to reading it at Christmas. She picks out the chapters on the Civil War, explaining that she had always been a Cromwellian at heart, and sends her good wishes to WSC and CSC for 1957. Signed manuscript.

Letter from Anne Chamberlain (8 Chester Square [London]) to WSC, thanking him for sending her a copy of the third volume of his “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples”. She tells him that she had hoped that he would not forget her, and was delighted to receive the book. She explains that she had been ill for the last month with Asian flu, which was why she had not written before, and adds that she was particularly looking forward to the chapters on the American War of Independence. Letter from Anne Chamberlain (University College Hospital [London]) to WSC, thanking him for sending her a copy of the fourth volume of his “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples” and particularly thanking him for sending her the whole series. She states that the book had only just reached her in hospital, and she had immediately turned to the chapters on America, which were very exciting. She ends by sending her love to CSC and congratulating WSC on his recovery [from pneumonia and jaundice]. Signed manuscript.
