CHAR 28/24 Letters from WSC to Lady Randolph Churchill. Several letters relate to the publication of WSC's first book "The Story of the Malakand Field Force" and the file also contains newspaper cuttings of reviews of the work. The file also contains material relating to the Tirah Expeditionary force and the majority of items date between January and April 1898. All letters are manuscript and signed unless otherwise described.

Letter from WSC (4th Hussars [Bangalore] India) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] enclosing corrections [CHAR 28/24/6-9] to ["The Story of The Malakand Field Force"] and discussing illustrations and the publication his book. Other subjects include: the meanness of the D[aily] T[elegraph]; the necessity of travelling with an escort; the death of Sir Henry Havelock-Allen; and the Simla [authorities'] refusal to allow him to join Sir Bindon Blood. He asks her to use her influence to secure his posting to Egypt with Sir Herbert Kitchener, reports that he has dislocated his shoulder at polo and discusses the progress of the Tirah campaign. He asks her to ask [Albert Edward, Prince of Wales] to write to Sir William Lockhart on his behalf, discusses the meanness of the D[aily] T[elegraph], asks her to use her influence to secure his posting to Egypt, speculates on the fragility of life and the future career of "Jack" [John S Churchill]. In a postscript he discusses the speeches of [Lord] Curzon [later Lord Curzon of Kedleston] on India. Envelope present.

He describes his work drawing maps, discusses the publication [of "The Story of the Malakand Field Force"] and his anxiousness about its reception and informs her that he has decided to go to Egypt as a correspondent during his leave.

He also informs her of his intention to try and join the Tirah expeditionary force after a polo tournament, says that he hopes [1st] Lord Roberts has used his influence on his behalf and includes a quote from Schopenhauer. Letter from WSC (c/o Sir Bindon Blood, Meerut [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he discusses the publication [of "The Story of the Malakand Field Force"] and his hopes that it will be published before Lord Fincastle's book; describes his hosts; expresses his hopes that she has secured his posting to Egypt and that General [Ian] Hamilton may be able to involve him with the Tirah Expeditionary Force; and discusses the progress of his novel ["Savrola"] which he describes as "destitute of...squalor and animal emotions".

Letter from WSC (Meerut [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he says that he did not write articles in the Pioneer, but criticises the Indian bureaucracy for "jobbery" and the mismanagement of the Tirah campaign. He discusses ["The Story of the Malakand Field Force"], says that he has been disappointed on re-reading the manuscript and reports that his team was defeated in the polo tournament.

He describes the extensive press coverage of events; the criticism in England of public servants who serve in India; the acceptance of all reports from the frontier; the criticism by some soldiers serving in India of their senior officers; a "higher mood" which also exists in the army which is evidenced by the example of bravery of demonstrated by James Clow; and features of mountain warfare.

He also discusses the publication of ["The Story of the Malakand Field Force"] and the ignorance and carelessness of Moreton Frewen in editing it, and asks her to sell an article "Unus contra mundum" to the Pall Mall [Magazine] and discusses financial affairs. Letter from WSC ([Bangalore, India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he expresses delight at receiving a telegram from her and says that he has sent corrected proofs to Longmans in case a second edition [of "The Story of the Malakand Field Force"] is published and encloses a preface letter [CHAR 28/24/88] in which he discusses his regret at not correcting the proofs of the first edition which is describes as a "tribute to the slovenly hurry of the times".
