He relates a conversation with Lord Randolph about W H Smith, [Secretary of State for War] about the army estimates; the acceptance of Lord Randolph's resignation by [Robert, 3rd] Lord Salisbury; its publication in the Times; its implications on Irish affairs; conversations with Lord Randolph's political colleagues including [1st] Lord Ashbourne [formerly Edward Gibson], [Charles] Ritchie, Sir Michael Hicks Beach [later Lord St Aldwyn], [Robert, 3rd] Lord Salisbury, Lord Hartington [later 8th Duke of Devonshire], Sir Henry James, [George] Goschen about the possibility of a coalition between the Conservatives and the Liberals and Walter Long; animosity against Lord Randolph; the treatment of [Frances] Duchess of Marlborough by Lady Salisbury after a ball at Hatfield [Hertfordshire]; the behaviour of Lord Rowton; Arthur Balfour's insistence on the issue of army estimates; the incompetence of Lord Iddesleigh and a prediction that the Government will fall. Includes a conversation with [Robert, 3rd] Lord Salisbury about the possibility of forming a coalition government with Lord Hartington [later 8th Duke of Devonshire] as Prime Minister; [George] Goschen's approval for a coalition; Lord Hartington's opinion that it would create resentment among Liberal Unionists and that he would be unlikely to join Lord Salisbury's Cabinet; Sir Henry James' predictions about the members of the Cabinet; increasing support for Lord Randolph; and Queen [Victoria's] annoyance that Lord Randolph had written his letter of resignation from Windsor Castle. Recollections of Alice, Lady Salisbury, formerly Lady Alice Gore concerning the impact of the resignation of Lord Randolph Churchill on [Robert, 3rd] Lord Salisbury which was brought to his attention during a ball attended by [Frances] Duchess of Marlborough . She recalls that Lord Salisbury suggested to his wife, Lady Salisbury, that she should not wish the Duchess of Marlborough goodbye on the following day as Lord Randolph's letter of resignation had appeared in the Times. Letter from "Bobbety" [5th Lord Salisbury earlier Lord Cranborne](House of Lords) to "Mamma" [Alice, Lady Salisbury] enclosing an account by Sir Henry Drummond Wolff of Lord Randolph Churchill's resignation [see CHAR 28/116/1-14]. He informs her that WSC was given the account by a solicitor, asks her whether she would be able to amplify the details and comments on WSC's "very strong feelings" about his father's resignation.
