If you’re overwhelmed with hits, you can refine your search to make the results more manageable; for example, by adding a date range. Click on the “Advanced Search” link to the right of the search box.

Here you can be more specific about the criteria you want to apply to your search, refining it to words and phrases, or dates or periods that you’d like to include or exclude. You can also select particular series of Sir Winston’s papers in which to search to focus on particular areas.

Examples of Advanced Searching

To find results that contain all of a certain set of words...

Enter each word into a new field with the 'AND' operator applied in each case.
E.g. "joseph AND chamberlain AND imperial AND preference".

To find results that contain an exact phrase or wording

Enter the exact phrase within quotation marks, e.g. "never in the field of".
Note that this can be applied to either the global search bar or Advanced Search fields.

To find results that contain one or more of a certain set of words...

Enter each word into a new field with the 'OR' operator applied in each case.
E.g. "joseph OR chamberlain OR imperial OR preference" (useful for combining search terms).

To find results that contain one word or phrase but not another

Enter each word into a new field with the 'NOT' operator applied in each case.
E.g. "Imperial preference NOT joseph chamberlain" (useful to exclude certain phrases from a broader search).
