Letter from [Frances, Duchess of] Marlborough to Jennie [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which she discusses the "bitter sorrow" which has been caused by both her sons [Lord Randolph Churchill and Lord Blandford, later George, 8th Duke of Marlborough] arguing with each other [over the gift of a ring to Jennie] and turning against her and [John, 7th Duke of Marlborough]. She says that she has treated [Jennie] "as a daughter in word &deed", despite sometimes thinking her unwise. Envelope present.

Letter from [Frances, Duchess of Marlborough] (Huntercombe [Berkshire]) to Jennie [Lady Randolph Churchill] marked "confidential" in which she urges her not to harbour thoughts of revenge, to ward off her anxiety "by the exercises of Domestic Virtues!!!" and to see friends who are not jealous of her success in society. She also invites her and "Jack" [John S Churchill] to come and "vegetate" with her; discusses this "crise" [crisis] in her life and advises her to make herself essential to him [Lord Randolph Churchill].

She discusses a future interview with [Lord Randolph]; says that she does not want to leave [Lady Randolph] alone in London; urges her to seek the advice of her mother [Clara Jerome]; and says that she cannot understand Randolph being "so hard if he realises all you suffer" and that she does not think that there is "any other woman". She advises [Lady Randolph] to "lead a different life" if she wishes to regain her influence over him [Randolph]; says that she would be able to advise [Lady Randolph] in household management; that she is sure that [Lady Randolph] has no reason to be jealous although she has heard talk from Lady Londonderry and others; that she hopes that "nothing will be observed at Newmarket". Letter from [Frances, Duchess of Marlborough] (50 Grosvenor Square [London]) to Jennie [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which she discusses the health of [Lord Randolph Churchill]; says that she receives reports from Dr [Robson] Roose; asks Jennie to thank Dr Keith for his care of "R" [Lord Randolph]; and comments on discipline required for WSC, that Lady Edith Ward is flirting with Lord Chesterfield and on the recovery of her jewels. The second page of the letter is marked "private" and contains observations on [Lord Randolph's] obstinacy and refusal to recognise the gravity of his illness and on her anxiety about him.
