He says that the Prince's condition was so serious that several members of the Royal Family, including Queen [Victoria] were summoned; explains that it was feared that the prince might die on the same day as the [Prince Albert the] Prince Consort; describes the dignified behaviour of [Alexandra] Princess [of Wales, later Queen Alexandra] and congratulates him on the birth of [Charles, later 9th Duke of Marlborough].

Letter from Egell ("80 miles from Fort Charter" [Rhodesia]) to Lord Randolph Churchill in which he reports that Major [Hugh] Giles has broken his collarbone; gives details of the difficulties experienced by the expedition which are chiefly caused by the tiredness of the oxen and other pack animals; and explains that unless Lord Randolph is able to send him replacement oxen that he will be unable to reach Fort Salisbury [Rhodesia].
