Note by [Arthur] Neville Chamberlain [Prime Minister] saying that he wanted to sound out opinion on whether it would be desirable to alter the position of the Speaker of the House of Commons, if opposition persisted, as seemed certain to be the case. Chamberlain suggests that the Speaker could be made a nominal MP "for St Stephens", with the House of Commons as constituents, but admits that this move could be criticised in a new Parliament, as the Speaker could not then be re-elected. Chamberlain notes that opinion was very divided on the subject. Signed manuscript.
