Letter from Sir [Joseph] Austen Chamberlain (the Goring Hotel, Ebury Street [London]) to WSC, sending him copies of letters [not present] which WSC had written to him in 1913, when they were trying to find a solution to the Irish question. Chamberlain remarks that he thought their efforts had been wholly creditable to them both, and asks if he could include the letters in a book. The book was to consist mainly of Chamberlain's letters to his father [Joseph Chamberlain], supplemented with a few letters exchanged with others.

In a postscript, Chamberlain adds that he had no copy of WSC's Cabinet memoranda, but even if he had, would not think of asking permission to publish them. He did however have permission to use some letters from 1st Lord Morley on the same subject, and recalls his talk with WSC on the Admiralty yacht "Enchantress" following the launch of HMS Warspite and the Admiralty dinner given by WSC for Morley, F E Smith [later 1st Lord Birkenhead] and Chamberlain himself. Signed typescript and manuscript, annotated "Shall be delighted for Sir Austen to publish the letters" and "Letters returned 22.7.36".
