Letter from WSC to Geoffrey Mason, Lloyds Bank, Pall Mall, London SW1, draft letter to the Inland Revenue, on tax affairs relating to "The History of the English Speaking Peoples", noting that he had delivered the manuscript to Cassell &Co. in September 1939, and had been paid £15,000, less £1,000 retained on account of an epilogue, which had not been completed, WSC had then "retired" from the literary and journalistic profession as from 3 Sept 1939, and he had paid tax on the whole of the £15,000. Having re-read the manuscript after the War he felt that it could be greatly improved in various ways "he has his past reputation as a man of letters to consider, and would like to correct the proofs and recast certain portions of the work" asking if he was to do this without remuneration of any kind, whether this would "vitiate" his retired status [carbon].
